Burgess Animal Book Chapter 1 - Title
- Jenny Wren Gives Peter an Idea
- Jenny arranges to go to school with Old Mother Nature
Reddy Fox was chasing Peter rabbit through the forest until eventually the chase came to a halt by a hickory tree near a small pond. Peter managed to slip into a hole within the tree roots. The fox knew he wouldn't be able to get into the hole or dig it any larger so he trotted off.
When the fox was gone Peter ran to a long stone wall. On said wall Jenny Wren was perched. She had just gotten back from the south where she had gone for the winter. When they started talking the topic drifted to the fox attack. Jenny only laughed at Peter and asked why he hadn't just jumped into the water. Peter pointed out that he would stay on land at all costs as he didn't like swimming unless he had to. Jenny then said that where she had been staying for the winter there was one of Peter's cousins called the Marsh Rabbit/Hare. This member of Peter's family gladly spent time swimming. Peter didn't believe that was possible as the only family member he knew of was his cousin Jumper the hare. And he knew that Jumper didn't like swimming either. Peter explained that the only differences between him: a cottontail rabbit, and jumper: a snowshoe hare was that: Jumper was larger, he barely spent any time in burrows and he changed fur colour during the winter. Jenny listened then pointed out that Peter didn't know about any of his other cousins because he never traveled. Then she suggested that he'd go ask Old Mother Earth some questions about his family. Peter agreed to this then bounced off to where he could find Mother Earth.
After a while of walking Peter managed to find where Old Mother Earth lived. When they started talking he asked her about the marsh hare. It turned out that what Jenny had said was true. After a little more conversation on the subject Peter hesitantly asked if he could come every day to ask Mother Earth more questions. She agreed to this but said she was too busy for anymore questions today. So she sent him home to think of what to ask for the next morning as that was the time they had set. And Peter did just that.
